Many interventions focus on lifting families out of poverty by focusing either on early childhood education or economic/employment assistance for parents. A two-generation approach is needed to help mothers and children overcome barriers to success and break the intergenerational cycle of poverty in which they find themselves.
New Life Directions Ministries aims to lift single mothers and their children out of poverty through a Two Generation Approach that focuses on providing stable housing, life coaching, case management, job placement, and financial assistance for mothers while providing high-quality early childhood education for their children.
We have successfully served 150 single families annually, through transitional housing and wrap-around services for many years. With this project, we propose to build and operate 20 permanent supportive housing units for homeless single mothers and their children. Residents will have access to 24/7 intensive, on-site case management services, individualized tenancy services, eviction prevention education (including tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities, lease navigation and landlord communication), job training and placement, food and other client assistance. The project also includes the building and launch of an on-site Child Development Center to provide trauma-informed care and support for formerly homeless children to get them on track developmentally. Our program is designed to promote positive parenting and aid parents in caring for the physical, social, and emotional health of themselves and their children. This project also allows us to extend and deepen our program offerings to our 100+ non-residential clients. As mothers move toward financial stability and learn positive parental strategies through our trauma-informed educational approaches that prepare them for success in school. Mothers in turn, will be able to confidently pursue further education, training or gainful employment knowing that their children are not only well-cared for, but getting the best possible early childhood education designed with their specific needs in mind. These interventions coupled with a community of single mothers in adjacent units will provide families with a sense of belonging and a support system to encourage their continued success.
